朝日あさひの下したで、
白しろい布ぬのが風かぜに揺ゆれる。
空そらまで清きよらか。

Beneath the morning sun,
white cloth sways in the breeze.
Even the sky feels pure.

湖面こめんに、
朝あさの光ひかりが踊おどっている。
一日いちにちが始はじまる。

Morning light
dances across the lake.
A new day begins.

夏なつの畑はたけで、
布団ふとんが陽ひを浴あびている。
風かぜまで温あたたかい。

In the summer field,
futons bask in the sunshine.
Even the breeze feels warm.

東ひがしの空そらが、
少すこしずつ紅あかく染そまる。
山やまが目めを覚さます。

The eastern sky
slowly blushes with dawn.
The mountains awaken.

朝あさの鳥とりが、
空高そらたかく舞まい上あがる。
心こころも軽かるくなる。

A morning bird
soars high into the sky.
The heart rises with it.

夕暮ゆうぐれが、
町まちをゆっくり包つつんでゆく。
灯あかりが待まっている。

Twilight
slowly embraces the town.
The lights are waiting.

月つきのない夜よる、
虫むしの声こえだけが聞きこえる。
静しずけさにも色いろがある。

On a moonless night,
only the insects can be heard.
Silence has its own color.

祖母そぼが、
小ちいさな傷きずをやさしく手当てあてする。
痛いたみも安心あんしんする。

Grandmother
gently tends a small wound.
Even pain finds comfort.

囲炉裏いろりの前まえで、
温あたたかい汁しるをゆっくり味あじわう。
体からだの奥おくまで届とどく。

Before the hearth,
warm soup is savored slowly.
It reaches deep within.

冬ふゆの朝あさ、
冷つめたい空気くうきに思おもわず足早あしばやになる。
家いえの湯気ゆげが恋こいしい。

On a winter morning,
the cold quickens every step.
Home's warm steam calls me back.

田たの土つちから、
小ちいさな芽めが顔かおを出だす。
命いのちの始はじまり。

A tiny sprout
emerges from the rice field.
The beginning of life.

山道やまみちに、
小ちいさな穴あなから虫むしが姿すがたを現あらわす。
土つちも息いきをしている。

From a tiny opening,
an insect emerges onto the mountain path.
Even the earth breathes.

薄うすい氷こおりが、
朝日あさひにそっと溶とけてゆく。
壊こわれやすさも美うつくしい。

Thin ice
melts softly in the morning sun.
Fragility has its beauty.

山頂さんちょうで、
大おおきく息いきを吸すい込こむ。
胸むねいっぱいの空そら。

At the mountaintop,
I take a deep breath.
The sky fills my chest.

尺八しゃくはちの音ねが、
静しずかな寺てらに響ひびいてゆく。
空くうが歌うたになる。

The sound of a shakuhachi
echoes through the quiet temple.
Empty space becomes song.

大工だいくが、
梁はりを肩かたで支ささえて運はこぶ。
力ちからは静しずか。

A carpenter
carries a heavy beam upon his shoulder.
Strength is quiet.

異国いこくの香辛料こうしんりょうが、
小ちいさな市場いちばに並ならぶ。
旅たびは味あじから始はじまる。

Foreign spices
rest in the little market.
Journeys begin with flavor.

山やまいっぱいに、
楓かえでが紅あかく染そまっている。
秋あきが燃もえている。

Across the mountains,
maples blaze with autumn.
The season is on fire.

川辺かわべの楊柳ようりゅうが、
水面みなもへ長ながい影かげを落おとす。
風かぜまで細ほそい。

The willow
casts a long shadow across the river.
Even the breeze is slender.

椋むくの大木たいぼくに、
小鳥ことりたちが集あつまってくる。
森もりの朝あさの約束やくそく。

Small birds
gather in the great muku tree.
A morning promise of the forest.
